Fred is CLEAR's very own Ted, with a mission to help younger children to talk about and understand difficult thoughts and feelings, and to promote kindness and thoughtful behaviour towards others.

How Fred started

The Adventures of Fred & How He Got His Powers Back is a book created by CLEAR Ideas, our children and young people’s coproduction group, in conjunction with The Writers Block. Written for children by children and young people with experience of trauma, the book explores difficult situations, how these can affect our feelings and how therapy can help.

Fred’s Next Adventure

Fred the Ted can’t wait to visit your school! He’s super excited to meet your students, share his wonderful story, The Adventures of Fred and How He Got His Powers Back, and leave a copy with each class to enjoy. With the help of your amazing Teachers and Teaching Assistants, Fred’s visit will be full of fun and learning!

Fred also has some fantastic resources he can send your way! These can be printed out and used as part of your lesson planning, tailored to each key stage. It’s all about making Fred’s visit as magical and meaningful as possible! Freds KS1 and KS2 sessions are aimed at all children, regardless of their life experiences so far.

Through Fred’s stories and activities, we hope to reach children early on, encouraging them to talk about anything that might be worrying them. Fred will help children to understand the importance of positive relationships, being kind and respectful, and knowing when to ask for help if something doesn’t feel right. Sessions last for 40 minutes and we would recommend groups of no more than 30 children.

By introducing these important lessons early, we can help prevent difficult experiences and support the emotional well-being of every child. Fred’s visit also aims to build strong, healthy relationships—between the children themselves, and within the communities they’re growing up in.

Sessions include:

  • Storytelling
  • Dramatic play
  • Enactment
  • Exploring feelings in the body
  • Group Discussion

The aims of the sessions are to:

  • Help younger children to talk about and understand difficult thoughts and feelings
  • Promote kindness, empathy and thoughtful behaviour towards others
  • Start to explore the way that feelings can be felt in different parts of the body
  • Deliver the core message that every child has the right to feel safe
  • Build resilience around difficult experiences
  • Start to think about who to talk to if worries get too big to hold on your own

Next Steps!
If you’d like Fred to visit your school, it’s as easy as 1-2-3! Simply download, complete, and return our  document Fred's Fun School Visit Application Form (87 KB)   found here. This will help us prepare for Fred’s visit and ensure it’s perfect!

How You Can Help Fred’s Work!
Fred’s visits are made possible thanks to lottery funding, and every visit helps spread the word about our charity’s mission. To keep Fred on the move and visiting as many children as possible, we’d love it if you could host a fun fundraiser! Ideas like a teddy bear picnic are a great way to support Fred’s Fund. Every little bit helps Fred bring his message to more children!

Fred the Ted was created with love by CLEAR Ideas, a group of brave children and young people who’ve experienced trauma. They want to help other kids stay safe through early intervention, encouraging them to ask for help when they need it, prevent mental health struggles, and promote kindness and respect in all their relationships.
